Bicheno is a truly charming coastal town in Tasmania’s NE region 177 km n-e of Hobart. Almost half way down Tasmania’s east coast, Bicheno is blessed with Tasmania’s mildest climate as well as excellent beaches and stunning scenery. Established as a whaling centre (1803) (predating the colony’s official settlement), it was named after the British Colonial Secretary, James Bicheno. It served as a coal port for a short time but fishing was always the town’s lifeblood and remains so today together with a growing tourist trade. Douglas-Apsley NP (14 km n-w) stunning undisturbed area of eucalypts, rugged gorges & waterfalls with Apsley Gorge Lookout and waterhole for safe swimming. Local vineyards (18 km s-w) include Springbrook and Freycinet. Freycinet NP (40 km south) Tasmania’s oldest park (1916) covers almost 12 000 ha of magnificent coastal scenery, abundant wildlife, rock climbs & amazing walking trails. Highlights include pink granite Hazard Ranges peaks (Amos, Dove, Mayson) and Wineglass Bay voted as one of the world’s ten best beaches.
